In just seven months, Apple’s App Store has reached the 20,000th mark. That’s 5,000 more applications to choose from since January 16, 2009.

As of writing this, Apptism, a website that tracks applications on the App Store, is tracking 20,142 applications.

Looking back, when the App Store officially launched in July 11, 2008, it only had 500 applications available for download. That number doubled in July 26, 2008, and the 10,000 mark was achieved in December 5 of last year.

Another note: it’s been barely a month since Apple announced that 500,000,000 iPhone/iPod touch apps have been downloaded from the App Store. Most of the downloads were probably free apps. Still, half-a-billion is nothing to sneeze at. That’s a testament to the vibrancy of the App Store and the devices connected to it.
