iPhone 3GS

A study has revealed that after less than three years in the market, Apple has become the third largest smartphone maker in the world, shipping 7.04 million iPhones during the quarter which ended in September of 2009, thus grabbing 17.1% of the world’s smartphone market share. The same study from research firm Gartner also showed that Apple’s market share grew 49.2% year-over-year, from 12.9% during the third quarter of 2008 to 17.1% during this year’s quarter.

Overall, 41 million smartphones were purchased by end users during the third quarter of 2009. Nokia is still on top with 39.3% of the sales, followed by Research in Motion with 20.8%.

Apple’s share of the smartphone market is expected to continue growing this fourth quarter from expansion into the Chinese market as well as the addition of new carriers in many countries.
