Apple released EFI firmware updates for the MacBook and MacBook Pro as well as SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0

MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 and MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 will eliminate the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. When installation is complete, run Software Update again, and install SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0

Please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/MacBook EFI Firmware Update.app or /Applications/Utilities/MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.app) to make sure the firmware update process is completed. The updater will launch automatically when the installation is complete.

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 (3.36MB) and MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 (3.14MB). are both available for download at Apple Support Download page. Check this page out for more info about EFI Firmware.

As mentioned, the EFI firmware updates for the MacBook and MacBook Pro are should be applied first prior to installing SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0. This update works with the following EFI updates:

  • iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.4
  • Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2
  • MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4
  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8

According to this knowledge base article, Mac models affected are those released between late 2008 to mid 2009:

  • MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
  • MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009)
  • MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
  • iMac (20-inch, Early 2009)
  • iMac (20-inch, Mid 2009)

  • Mac mini (Early 2009)

The other update Apple released today is AirPort Client Update 2009-002, recommended for all Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and includes fixes for the following:

  • Inability to turn AirPort on or off in some cases after upgrading from Mac OS X Leopard
  • An occasional loss of network connection when using Wake on Demand
  • Inability to create a computer-to-computer network, or share the Internet connection on some MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers
