
Apple had its best non-holiday quarter, posting a revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion. Profit’s up by almost 15% as compared to last year’s $1.07 billion. Revenue year-over-year is up by 12%. The company now has approximately $31 billion in cash and short-term investments.
Macs
A total of 2.6 million Macs were sold, 1.754 million of which were Mac portables. Mac desktops shipments and revenue were down year-over-year (10% and 18%) and Mac portables has a 2% decrease in revenue but increased shipments 13% year-over-year. Revenue from Mac desktops generated $1.129 billion and from Mac portables, $2.2 billion.
Compared to last quarter, Mac desktops saw a 4% and 8% increase in shipments and revenue while Mac portables shipments increased 25% and revenue increased 16%.
The reaction to the updated portable lineup was “very favorable” and resulted in faster sales.
Fifty percent of Macs sold in stores were to those who never owned a Mac before.
iPhone
5.2 million iPhones were sold this quarter resulting in a 37% increase from last quarter and a huge 626% increase year-over-year. Revenue if up 11% from last quarter at $1.689 billion but reflects a 303% surge year-over-year.
There has been a “tremendous” response to the iPhone 3GS resulting in Apple not being able to keep up with demand. Rollout of the iPhone 3GS in new countries may have to be move by “a few weeks here or there”.
iPod and iTunes Store
As forecasted by Apple, sales of the iPod classic, nano and shuffle declined year-over-year, resulting in a 7% decrease in shipments and 11% decrease in revenue. Revenue this quarter from iPods was $1.492 billion from sales of 10.125 million iPods.
Apple still expects sales of conventional iPods to decline, cannibalized by the iPhone and iPod touch.
Half of traditional iPod purchases went to first time buyers of iPods.
The iPod touch grew 130% year-over-year. Apple expects it to “grow significantly” in the next quarter. Portends the coming of new iPod touches.
Over eight billion songs have been purchased in the iTunes Store as of last week.
Regional sales
International sales accounted for 44% of this year’s third fiscal quarter.
Apple Asia Pacific plus FileMaker Inc. sold 230,000 Macs with a revenue of $592 million. Year-over-year, this represents an increase in shipments of 11%, revenue by 4%. Compared to last quarter, there’s a 14% increase to units but up only by 2% when it comes to revenue.
Apple Americas had 1.147 million Macs sold with $3.827 billion in revenues. Apple Europe sold 626,000 Macs, revenue of $2.006 billion. Apple Japan represented 108,000 in Mac sales and $416 million in revenues.
Next quarter
Revenue in the fourth quarter 2009 is expected to be between $8.7 billion and $8.9 billion. Cost of components are rising but Apple is still committed to delivering state-of-the-art products and provide “ever increasing value”.
Toshiba was paid $500 million for long-term NAND flash supply, a “very key component” in many of Apple’s products.
