Apple announced in a press release yesterday that over one million iPhone 3GS units have been sold over the weekend. Billed as the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, customers lined up outside Apple Stores as early as June 18, a day ahead of the official launch, in order to be one of the first to get the iPhone 3G S.
The lines were not as long as when the iPhone 3G was launched but this might have been in part due to the fact that some customers already have pre-ordered the iPhone 3GS online. These customers had their iPhones delivered right on their doorstep.
Though the iPhone 3G also sold one million units over the same time period last year, this milestone is made remarkable by the fact that the iPhone 3GS for now is just being sold in eight countries. In contrast, the iPhone 3G was made available in over 20 countries when it was released on July 11, 2008.
In the same announcement, Apple also said that the new iPhone OS 3.0 have been downloaded six million times over a five day period. The iPhone OS 3.0, released on June 17, is a free update for all iPhone users. However, iPod touch users must pay $9.99 to get the latest iPhone operating system.
The iPhone 3GS is scheduled to be released in 30 more countries by July and will be in more than 80 countries by August. Japanese customers have already lined up to pre-order the iPhone 3GS last week and they will get the new iPhone by June 26.
