The name is a bit cheesy but the underlying technology is intriguing.

Magic Mouse

Apple today has released the successor to the Mighty Mouse, the pointing device that some Apple geeks love to hate (this Apple geek included).

The new wireless Magic Mouse is the first mouse to use Apple’s Multi-Touch technology which is already present in the iPhone, iPod touch, and Mac portables’ trackpads. Instead of buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top surface of the Magic Mouse is Multi-Touch.

Magic Mouse gestures

Magic Mouse can the standard right- and left-click, and can be programmed for right-handed or left-handed users. Running a finger vertically up or down will scroll a document or webpage. There’s also support for momentum scrolling. Moving a finger horizontally will scroll left or right. It is also possible to scroll 360-degrees to move a document or a photo.

Two-fingered swiping helps in navigating through Cover Flow in iTunes, and browsing through pages in Safari or pictures in iPhoto. Holding down the control key and swiping a finger up will result in the screen zooming in, swiping down will result in the screen zooming out. Setting up the Magic Mouse can be done through the Mouse preference window in System Preferences.

The Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth and has a battery life up to four months. Battery performance is extended via an advanced power management system that works with Mac OS X. The system automatically switches to low power modes when the mouse is inactive. The Magic Mouse requires two AA batteries and Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0.

The Magic Mouse is now available at the Apple Online Store Philippines and retails for ₱3,490. Estimated to ship in 3 to 4 weeks.
