I’ve posted bits about how the latest 27-inch iMac has been gaining praises from various review sites which includes Macworld which said, “Apple has not only blurred the line between consumer and professional systems, it’s darn near erased it.”

With one writer for The Mac Observer going as fas as issuing an obit for the Mac Pro.

Mini DisplayPort

Apple has a knowledge base article on how to use the 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode, essentially turning the iMac into an external display. You need to have a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable or a converter that converts other electrical, video, and audio protocols from another source device to Mini DisplayPort compliant signals

Command + F2
After connecting the Mini DisplayPort cable to the 27-inch iMac and to the source computer, the iMac will automatically enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer. However, if you have two 27-inch iMacs connected via a Mini DisplayPort cable, you must press command + F2 on the keyboard of the iMac you want as your second display.

To leave Target Display mode just press command + F2 on the iMac on Target Display mode. To go back to Target Display mode, just press command + F2 again.

Points to consider

While in Target Display mode:

applications opened prior to going into Target Display mode will continue to run;

the keyboard is used to adjust brightness settings and volume, and to control media playback. However, other keyboard and mouse input are disabled;

USB and FireWire ports, as well as the iSight camera, cannot be used.
