According to Joe Wilcox of Beta News, latest NPD data shows Apple dominating the “premium-priced” computer segment or computers priced above $1,000. NPD revealed that the Cupertino company has 91% market share on the premium computer segment which is up from May 2009′s 88% and way up from last year’s 66%.
This comes after Apple’s fiscal third quarter financial call last Tuesday where they said the company sold a total of 2.6 million Macs during quarter, up 17% from previous. Also, year-over-year, Apple’s Mac sales grew 4%, putting them 7 to 9 points ahead of the rest of the PC market.
Of the 2.6 million Macs, 849,000 were desktops and 1.754 million were portables. Compared to last quarter, desktops saw an increase by 4% while portable Macs had a healthy 25% jump.
Price cuts announced during the Worldwide Developer Conference held on June helped spur sales which resulted in supply constraints of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple expects supply to improve in the “next few weeks.”
Fifty percent of Macs sold in stores were to first time Mac buyers.
