
Western Digital has introduced their new My Book Studio desktop external drives with e-label displays which can show information about the contents of the drives even without being plugged. The new My Book Studio drives are equipped with FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces and are compatible with Mac OS X‘s TimeMachine backup application. The new drives feature user-selected password protection and include a 256-bit hardware-based encryption to provide a high level of security.
The e-label feature uses a high-contrast display akin to the e-paper technology used by Amazon in their Kindle devices. The e-label is customizable to let users describe the contents of the drive and it also displays the remaining storage capacity and drive security status. Both password and e-label information can be changed via the WD SmartWare application which comes with every My Book Studio drives. The software is also used to provide automatic or continuous backup once the drive has been plugged in. WD SmartWave is compatible with Apple‘s TimeMachine backup application on Mac OS X.
The new My Book Studio is offered in 500GB, 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB capacities. Prices range from $150 to $300 and every drive comes with a 3-year limited warranty.
