On April 8, Apple introduced the future of the iPhone OS. iPhone OS 4.0 was unveiled with 100 new user features and 1500 new APIs. Some of the new user features include multitasking, folders, updated Mail app, and iBooks for the iPhone. Apple also introduced iAd, Apple’s own mobile advertising platform.
Apple has been seeding iPhone OS 4.0 betas for the past few weeks and the third beta release offers a set of new features.
It’s now easier to quit multitasked apps. Before the third beta, quitting an app required having to press and hold an icon in the multitasking drawer and then quitting by pressing the red quit button. You have to do this for each and every app you want to quit. In iPhone 4.0 beta 3, pressing and holding an app in the multitasking drawer will cause all of the apps in the drawer to jiggle and ready for quitting, a behavior that mirrors when uninstalling apps.
There’s also a new widget controller for the iPod app as well as an orientation lock.
The latest beta extends the iPad’s spelling feature under iPhone OS 3.2 to iPhones and iPod touches. According to AppleInsider:
The spelling system extends the mechanism Apple created for copy and paste operations, enabling users to touch a misspelled word to select it, and then touch “Replace…” as an alternative to cut or copy operations.
The system then offers replacement word suggestions in blue type, allowing for one touch correction. Misspelled text is underlined in red…
New features seen in beta builds are not assured of being on the final release of iPhone OS 4.0. Apple may decide on the last minute to remove a feature as they see fit.
