Augmented Reality or AR is combining real-world and computer-generated data with the ‘blending’ of computer graphics into real video footage in real time. One example was demoed during TechCrunch50 from a company in Japan named Tonchidot. SekaiCamera (or “World Camera) uses the iPhone to display social media tags in the form of text and audio overlaid on the real world as seen through the iPhone’s camera.
Since then, with the release of iPhones OS 3.0 and the iPhone 3GS, more developers have experimented with AR applications, utilizing the built-in digital compass and the better camera on the 3GS. One of the first to demonstrate this was acrossair with Nearest Tube and New York Nearest Subway.
As far as I know, there are no apps yet in the App Store that can do AR. According to AppleInsider, augmented reality apps won’t be available until iPhone OS 3.1 is released.
