iPhone OS 3.0

Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1 for both iPhone and iPod touch, according to AppleInsider. The update, available as a free download from iTunes, includes the new Genius recommendation feature for the App Store and ringtone support for the iPhone.

iPhone and iPod touch users who already have iPhone OS 3.0 in their devices will receive the 3.1 update for free. For iPod touch users who haven’t yet updated to iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has made upgrading to the latest iPhone OS more appealing by lowering the price to $4.95 from $9.99.

A partial list of fixes in iPhone OS 3.1 are:

  • Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
  • Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
  • Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
  • Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
  • Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
  • Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

MacNN also noted that the new iPhone OS fixes the bug that allowed access to deleted messages in the Mail folder via Spotlight. Another fix involves correcting a CoreAudio bug that allowed maliciously crafted AAC or MP3 files to execute arbitray code.
