iPhone OS overtakes Symbian. They like the iPhone. Teens do, too. Just a hodgepodge of news bits in this post.
According to an AdMob report, Apple‘s iPhone OS has taken over Symbian as the most popular mobile phone operating system online. Whereas before, the iPhone OS only took the top spot in areas such as North America and Western Europe, this time it has taken a strong lead over at the south Pacific region with 79% of mobile traffic. The iPhone OS also is making steady progress in garnering use in Latin America and Eastern Europe but shows low usage in Nokia-dominated Asia as well as in Africa.

Worldwide, Apple’s mobile OS has taken 40% of mobile traffic in August, up from 33% in February. Symbian in the meantime has dropped from 43% in February 2009 to 34% in August. Data also shows Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS, Windows Mobile and Palm OS dropping in mobile traffic share while the new operating systems Android and WebOS showing quick uptakes. AdMob’s data doesn’t reflect actual marketshare nor does it reflect actual smartphone or handset sales. Rather it represents device usage and is based on Web and application use from AdMob’s publishers and applications worldwide.
In the meantime, CFI Group’s latest smartphone study has shown the iPhone as the ‘undisputed’ leader when in comes to customer satisfaction in the United States. More than 1,000 U.S. smartphone users were surveyed for this study and it showed that 92% of respondents say that the iPhone is their “ideal” handset. The iPhone garnered a score of 83 out of 100, beating its closest competitor by eight points.
Last but not the least, a survey of U.S. teens shows that majority own iPods, use iTunes, and plan to purchase an iPhone in the next six months. According to AppleInsider, Piper Jaffray revealed the results to investors showing 87% of the 600 teenagers surveyed owned an iPod, up from 84% the previous year. Even though majority still considered getting an iPod in the next 12 months, the figure has fallen 5%, from 79% during the fall of 2008 to 74% this year. Of the 600 U.S. teens surveyed, 40% said that they legally purchase music online, 93% of which use iTunes as their conduit to purchase songs.
When it came to the iPhone, 15% already own the smartphone with 22% intending to purchase it in the next six months. It is surmised that the $99 iPhone 3G plays an important part in the increased interest in the device.
“We believe that the teen demographic is a critical component of long-term growth in the digital music and mobile markets,” Senior Research Analyst Gene Munster said, “and Apple is taking its leading position in music and mobile markets.”
