Apple just released at update to their Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system.

According to Apple Support page the update is “recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It includes Safari 5 and general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.”

Fixes include:

  • resolve an issue that causes the keyboard or trackpad to become unresponsive
  • resolve an issue that may prevent some Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications from opening
  • address issues copying, renaming, or deleting files on SMB file servers
  • improve reliability of VPN connections
  • resolve a playback issue in DVD Player when using Good Quality deinterlacing
  • resolve an issue editing photos with iPhoto or Aperture in full screen view
  • improve compatibility with some braille displays

There are two ways to get Mac OS X 10.6.4: via Software Update or downloading the update directly from Apple.

First option is to go to the upper left and corner of your screen and click on the Apple logo. Select “Software Update…” and a window will appear which will say “Checking for new software…”

If you haven’t updated your Mac for quite awhile now or it’s your first time to update since purchasing your Mac, you will find a whole bunch of things that needs updating. One of them will be you Mac’s operating system. Mac OS X 10.6.4 requires 10.6.3 already installed in your system.

Second option is to download the update directly from Apple’s Support page and you can find that page here. The file is called a “Combo” file and it doesn’t require the latest version of 10.6 installed in your machine.

Please note that you will need a fast internet connection (or a whole lot of patience) as the Combo update is 887.37 MB big! However, if you’re Mac is already running 10.6.3 then you might want to choose the 607.21 MB download instead.

Before the update can proceed, your Mac will prompt you for your admin password. A reboot of your Mac is need to complete the upgrade.

As a reminder, always do a backup of your system before doing any operating system or software upgrades.
