Last week, I blogged about the two upgrade options to Snow Leopard: purchase the $29 (around P1,690) single-user license upgrade (or the $49 (P2,870) five-license Family Pack) or avail the Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program for P590 (only for those who purchased their Macs on or before June 8, 2009).
These two options are only for those running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. But what about those who are still using Mac OS X 10.4? At that time I thought Apple hasn’t made any announcement yet regarding upgrade options for Tiger users. Well, I certainly dropped the ball on this one because as clearly stated on Apple’s June 8, 2009 press release:
For Tiger® users with an Intel-based Mac, the Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife® ’09 and iWork® ’09 and will be available for a suggested price of $169 (US) and a Family Pack is available for a suggested price of $229 (US).
Oops. My bad.
How much will will the upgrades be in Philippine pesos? Based on the current price of the Mac Box Set (with Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard) at the Philippine online Apple Store, the Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard should retail for P9,890 for a single-user license and P13,390 for the Family Pack.
But what if a Tiger user doesn’t want either iLife ’09 and iWork ’09? Well, there’s the option of purchasing the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard upgrade for P7,290 ($129), then purchase the Snow Leopard upgrade for around P1,690 ($29). That brings the total to almost P9,000. For just less than P1,000 more, you can have iWork ’09 (P4,590) and iLife ’09 (also P4,590) if you buy the Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard.
By the way, just to make things clear, the iLife suite doesn’t come with every Mac OS X upgrade. It only comes ‘free’ with every Mac sold. Some might think that the Mac Box Set is not worth it because what you’re actually just paying for is the Mac OS X upgrade (P7290) plus iWork (P4,590). The reality is, you’re paying for the Mac OS X upgrade (P7,290) plus the latest iWork (P4,590) and iLife (P4,590) suites. The Mac Box Set is definitely worth it.
So, these are some things to take note of:
- Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will only run on Intel-based Macs.
- Only those currently running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard can use the Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade disc.
- Tiger users must purchase the Mac Box Set (with Snow Leopard) if they want to run Mac OS X 10.6.
- The latest iLife suite isn’t bundled with every Mac OS X upgrade disc.
September is just around the corner. Can’t wait to get my hands on Snow Leopard and get back 6GB of hard drive space, plus the other Mac OS X 10.6 yumminess.
The pricing in pesos for the Snow Leopard upgrades were just extrapolated from other Mac software products since the Philippine online Apple Store doesn’t have the upgrades listed yet.
The image, by the way, is not the Snow Leopard Mac Box Set, in case someone wants to nitpick.
Update:
Turns out you don’t have to pay ₱9,000 plus to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6. You don’t even have to pay ₱2,000. Check out my latest post on how to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard on the cheap.
