Snow Leopard

Apple just released Mac OS X 10.6.2 update and is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes for:

  • an issue that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly
  • a graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites
  • Spotlight search results not showing Exchange contacts
  • a problem that prevented authenticating as an administrative user
  • issues when using NTFS and WebDAV file servers
  • the reliability of menu extras
  • an issue with the 4-finger swipe gesture
  • an issue that causes Mail to quit unexpectedly when setting up an Exchange server
  • Address Book becoming unresponsive when editing
  • a problem adding images to contacts in Address Book
  • an issue that prevented opening files downloaded from the Internet
  • Safari plug-in reliability
  • general reliability improvements for iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, and iDisk
  • an issue that caused data to be deleted when using a guest account

According to this knowledge base article, the update also addresses one of the vexing problems I’ve encountered in Mail with regard to deleted RSS feeds that keeps coming back. The article also indicates numerous other fixes for fonts, graphics, MobileMe, network file systems, printing and faxing, and Safari.

Included with the 10.6.2 update is Security Update 2009-006 which addresses security issues in Apache, CoreMedia, Dictionary, QuickLook, Quicktime, and many more. Read about it here.

The Mac OS X 10.6.2 update is available automatically via Software Update or for manual download from Apple’s Support Download page as a delta update (473MB) or as a combo update (479MB). The delta update requires Mac OS X 10.6.1 while the combo update can be used on Macs running either Mac OS X 10.6 or Mac OS X 10.6.1. The manual download is recommended when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once.

Apple also released Mac OS X Server 10.6.2, Security Update 2009-006 Client and Security Update 2009-006 Server. More information from Apple Support Download.

It is recommended that you back up your system before installing the update. You can use Time Machine or any third-party software to do that.

Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your system. You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you’ve modified the operating system through other means.

Update:
Encountered the spinning beach ball when I applied the combo update on my 13-inch MacBook Pro. Had to shut down by pressing down on the power button for 5 seconds. Restarted and ran Disk Utility. Will know in a few days if anything got broken. The update did fix the Mail bug which caused deleted RSS feeds to keep coming back. Braaaains…

On the other hand, the update went smoothly on my iMac. However, the update did not fix the bug that caused the System Preference icon to bounce incessantly when launched with the app never opening. Force Quit is needed to stop this behavior. System Preferences then launches normally when clicked on for a second time.

Update 2:
The issue I had with the four-finger swipe has been fixed. Prior to the update, whenever I swiped up to reveal the desktop and then instinctively swiped down to try to bring back the windows into view, the windows would return to the screen but once my fingers left the trackpad, the windows would spring out of the screen, revealing the desktop again. I have to swipe my four fingers up again to bring back all the windows in view.

With the update, both swipe up and swipe down gestures with four fingers bring back the windows into view after evoking the swipe to reveal the desktop.

The update seems to have affected the brightness of my 13-inch MacBook Pro’s display. It’s much dimmer now. Whereas I could see what’s on the display well enough with the brightness bar set at two (or sometimes, even at one), I now have to crank it up to a third or up to half of the way. Not sure if I’m the only one who has this issue.
