For a quick rundown on some of the major changes in Snow Leopard, check out Macworld’s 11 Major New Snow Leopard Features. Right on top of the list (something I really don’t care about) is support for Exchange, Microsoft’s popular e-mail, contact, and calendar server. The rest of the major new features are:
- Malware Check: discussed in detail by Dan Moren.
- Exposé: Dock Exposé: very useful in dragging items or snippets from one application to another if you have multiple windows open.
- Dock: new way of minimizing windows.
- Finder: 512 x 512 icons; movie playback in icon or Cover Flow view.
- Smart Eject: the system now tells the user which application is still using an external drive. Mo more of the annoying can’t-eject-the-drive-because-umm-something-is-still-using-it-but-I-can’t-tell-you-what situations.
- Substitutions: systemwide, customizable text autosubstitutions. No more teh and taht mistakes for me.
- Services: some Mac geeks are talking about as if this is the next big thing.
- QuickTime X: Cleaner, slicker or annoying, unintuitive. You decide. Covered by Jonathan Seff.
- Preview: Smarter text selection. Can detect columns when selecting or highlighting texts.
- Accessibility: VoiceOver improvements, Braille displays support.
Aside from the above eleven major new features, Macworld also has a slideshow of minor changes:
- Easier event editing in iCal
- Browser plug-in crashes won’t bring down Safari
- Video screen capture
- Better security options
- Location-based time zone
- New desktop and screen savers
- Better Spotlight and many more
