Twiite’s geotagging API is now officially available letting third-party applications geotag a user’s tweets and display the location of where the tweet was posted. The new geotagging feature is only available in the API, there won’t be any changes in twitter.com itself.

Twitter is aware of privacy concerns, hence the opt-in nature of the feature:

It’s important to note geotagging is disabled by default for all users which means you will need to opt-in in order to use it. To activate the new geotagging functionality, go to your Settings page and click “Enable Geotagging”.

I’ve turned the feature on and though I don’t have an iPhone or iPod touch to try this feature on, I’m going to play around with Seesmic Web. Catch me if you can.
