After the release of the new MacBook Pros back in June, some customers started complaining about hearing click and beeps from their portables. The problem is specific to MacBook Pros with 7200 rpm hard drives installed. Aside from the strange clicking and beeping, some users were also experiencing slow hard drive access. Several weeks and several hundred posts later, Apple acknowledged the issue last week and released a fix this week.
Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0 is aimed to reduce “certain infrequent noises made by 7200-rpm drives that were shipped with June 2009 MacBook Pros.”
The 3.71MB firmware update can be downloaded directly from Apple. Requires Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Another firmware update is the Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1 which provides bug fixes and better compatibility with the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard. This update is only for Macs with Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset. Apple doesn’t say which model Macs have the Broadcom chipset.
The firmware update can be downloaded directly from Apple’s Support Download page (1.78MB).
Last but not the least, iPhoto update 8.1 adds several new print product options to iPhoto ’09:
- Hardcover books can be ordered in a new extra-large (13″ x 10″) size
- Includes three new book themes with travel-oriented designs: Tropical, Asian, Old World
- A variety of new holiday greeting cards themes are now available
This update is recommended for all users of iPhoto ’09 and is available via Software Update Utility or download directly from Apple’s Support Download page (160.4MB)
