Before the release of the Pre smartphone, Palm made it known beforehand that the Pre can sync with Apple’s iTunes. A famous hacker has revealed that Palm hack’s makes the Pre act like an iPod even reporting as the Palm device as being made by Apple.
Apple hasn’t made any public comment about this hack. However, a Knowledge Base article makes it clear that they know what’s happening and made it clear that a software update may break the hack:
… Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.
An iTunes update may break the hack anytime soon. Palm will of course play catch up by upgrading their OS to put in a new hack. They may also recommend their users not to upgrade to the latest iTunes version.
Why can’t Palm release their own multimedia manager anyway?
