In a Macworld article, Jonathan Seff talks about the new QuickTime X player; from the new look of the viewer with the floating title bar and controls, to the UI, its share and trim functions, and the much simplified export options. One big addition according the Seff is the screen recording ability which allows you to capture a video of what’s happening on your screen. Very useful in instances where you want to show someone how to do something on the Mac but are kilometers away from you. Two other new features are support for HTTP Live Streaming and the ability to play movie files in Finder when in icon or Cover Flow views.

Snow Leopard’s shiny new player didn’t get much love from Jason Snell though; calling the interface “an utter disaster” and that he’d “pay slightly more to not have the misguided QuickTime Player X as a part of the package”. If you share his sentiments and you don’t want to have anything to do with QuickTime X, don’t worry, Snow Leopard does give you the option of putting QuickTime 7 back in. I’m reserving judgment until Wednesday. What I do know is I’m going to have fun using the screen recording utility.
